It is a known fact that the SSDE or the Surface-supplied diving equipment is required for a great percentage of the commercial diving operations; Surface-supplied equipment is also required for non-commercial sector operations also. This equipment ranges from a very simple outer wear to the intricate and complex technological apparatus. Equipment needed for surface-supplied diving is high in number, but amongst them the breathing apparatus which is supplied with primary breathing equipment via a tube. Mentioning about the other, it is the harness, oxygen cylinder, weighed boots, helmets, diving clothing. The clothing is usually nylon, which enables the diver to move about freely, the oxygen cylinder is another important gear; the divers have to necessarily carry these paraphernalia.

The helmets are an important gear, and may be of metal, reinforced plastic composite (GRP), and is directly connected to the neck portion or a dry suit. The neck is the lower part of the helmet that seals against the neck of the diver. Of late, Neck dams have become neoprene or latex seals. The neck dam is quite significant and critical to diver safety and hence a reliable mechanism is needed to ensure that it is not inadvertently released during a dive or is at a risk of dislodging during a dive.
